What John 3:16 means

John 3:16 is the best-known sentence in the Bible, and it is spoken by Jesus himself, at night, to a teacher named Nicodemus who came with questions. In one line it says who acts, why, what he did, and what it is for: our Father, because he loved the world, gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

The love comes first. Our Father did not wait for the world to love him back or to become lovable; he loved it as it was, the same world that a few verses later loves darkness more than light. And love that is real gives. He did not send a stranger or a messenger. He gave his own Son, the one closest to his heart, so that his lost children could come home.

“Whoever” leaves no one out. To believe in him is more than agreeing with a fact about Jesus; it is trusting yourself to him. And the promise is not only escape from perishing but eternal life, the life of the Father’s family, which begins now. The very next verse says why he came: not to condemn the world, but so the world could be saved through him.

John 3:16 in context

14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

16 For our Father so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

17 For our Father did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so the world could be saved through him.

18 Whoever believes in him isn't condemned; whoever doesn't believe is condemned already, for not believing in the name of the one and only Son of our Father.
