What Isaiah 41:10 means

Isaiah 41:10 is our Father speaking directly to his people: “Fear not, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your Father.” Then come three promises in a row: I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

It was spoken into a frightening moment. A conqueror was rising and the nations were rushing to nail their idols down so they would not topple. Israel had no army that could stand. Instead of a strategy, our Father gives them himself. He reminds them who they are, “my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen,” and that he has not rejected them.

The heart of the verse is the reason given for not being afraid. It is not that the danger is small; it is “I am with you” and “I am your Father.” The FHB footnote explains that this renders the covenant formula usually translated “I am your God”: our Father binds himself to his people as a Father, not a distant deity. A few verses later he takes them by the right hand and says it again: “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

Isaiah 41:10 in context

8 But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend,

9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, "You are my servant; I have chosen you and not rejected you".

10 "Fear not, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your Father. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

11 See, all who rage against you will be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.

12 You will look for those who war against you, but you will not find them; those who battle against you will be as nothing at all."

13 For I, your Father, take hold of your right hand; I am the one who says to you, "Fear not, I am the one who helps you."
