Luke 22

Chapter 22.

22 ¹Now the Feast of Bread Without Yeast, called Passover, was approaching. ²The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to kill him, because they feared the people.

³Then Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. ⁴He went and conferred with the chief priests and temple officers how he might betray him to them. ⁵They were glad and agreed to give him money. ⁶He agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray him to them away from the crowd.

The Last Passover Prepared

⁷Then the day of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

⁸Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go prepare the Passover for us to eat."

⁹They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"

¹⁰He said, "Once you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters,

¹¹"and tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' ¹²And he will show you a large upper room, furnished; prepare it there."

¹³They went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

¹⁴When the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.

¹⁵He told them, "I have deeply longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. ¹⁶For I tell you, I won't eat it until it's fulfilled in the kingdom of our Father." ¹⁷Taking a cup and giving thanks, he said, "Take this and divide it among yourselves. ¹⁸For I tell you, from now on I will not drink the vine's fruit until our Father's kingdom comes."

¹⁹He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, given for you. Do this in memory of me." ²⁰He did the same with the cup after supper: "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you. ²¹But look—the hand of the one who betrays me is with me on the table. ²²The Son of Man goes as determined, but woe to that man through whom he is handed over!"

²³They began asking each other which of them would do this.

²⁴A dispute also arose among them about which of them was the greatest.

²⁵He said to them, "Kings of nations dominate them, and rulers over them are called benefactors. ²⁶Not so with you: let the greatest among you become like the youngest, the leader like the one serving. ²⁷Who is greater—the guest at the table or the one serving? The guest, isn't it? Yet I am among you as one who serves.

²⁸"You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, ²⁹and I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, ³⁰so you'll eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

³¹"Simon, Simon, listen—Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, ³²but I prayed for you, that your faith not fail. Once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

³³Peter said, "Lord, I'm ready to go with you to prison and death."

³⁴Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter: the rooster won't crow today before you deny three times that you know me."

³⁵He asked, "When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they said.

³⁶He said to them, "But now, let the one with a money bag take it, and a knapsack too. Let the one without a sword sell his cloak and buy one. ³⁷For I tell you this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted among sinners.' For what is written about me is coming true."

³⁸They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He said to them, "It is enough."

The Son Surrenders to the Father

³⁹And he went out, as usual, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.

⁴⁰When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray you don't give in to temptation."

⁴¹And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed,

⁴²saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but yours, be done."

⁴³And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. ^a a v43 Verses 43-44 are absent from some early manuscripts. They are printed here, as in most modern Bibles. ⁴⁴In agony he prayed more intensely; his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

⁴⁵When he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them asleep from grief,

⁴⁶he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so you don't yield to temptation."

Betrayed With a Kiss

⁴⁷While he was still speaking, a crowd came, led by the one called Judas, one of the twelve. He came up to Jesus to kiss him,

⁴⁸but Jesus said to him, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

⁴⁹Seeing what was about to happen, those with him said, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" ⁵⁰And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

⁵¹But Jesus answered, "No more of this!" And he touched the ear and healed him. ⁵²Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who had come out against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber? ⁵³Every day I was with you in the temple, and you didn't lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the authority of darkness."

Peter Denies Knowing Jesus

⁵⁴Seizing him, they led him and brought him into the high priest's house; Peter followed at a distance. ⁵⁵They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat together; Peter sat among them. ⁵⁶But a servant girl, seeing him sitting facing the light, stared at him and said, "This one too was with him."

⁵⁷But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him."

⁵⁸Shortly after, another saw him and said, "You too are one of them." But Peter said, "Man, I'm not."

⁵⁹About an hour later, another insisted, "This man was certainly with him, for he's a Galilean too."

⁶⁰But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're saying." Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered what the Lord had told him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." ⁶²And he went out and wept bitterly.

⁶³Now the men who were holding Jesus mocked him as they beat him. ⁶⁴They blindfolded him and kept asking, "Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?" ⁶⁵And they said many other things against him, insulting him.

Jesus Stands Before the Council

⁶⁶At daybreak, the people's council of elders convened—chief priests and scribes—and led him away to their council, saying,

⁶⁷"If you are the Christ, tell us." He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe,

⁶⁸"and if I ask you, you will not answer.

⁶⁹"But from now on the Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the power of our Father."

⁷⁰They all said, "So you are the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am."

⁷¹They said, "What more testimony do we need? For we heard it ourselves from his mouth."
