What Romans 8:28 means

Romans 8:28 says: “We know all things work together for good for those who love our Father, who are called according to his purpose.” It is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, and one of the most misread.

It does not say that all things are good. Romans 8 is honest about suffering: creation groans, we groan, and just before this verse we are told that we do not even know how to pray, so the Spirit pleads for us with wordless groans. Into that weakness Paul says that our Father is working all things, even the painful ones, together toward good.

The next verse tells us what “good” means. Those he foreknew he predestined “to be shaped to his Son’s image, so he would be firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” The good is a family: children made like his Son. The FHB footnote puts it plainly: our Father’s eternal purpose is a family, the family he always meant to have. That is why nothing in Romans 8, not death or life or anything in creation, can separate his children from his love.

Romans 8:28 in context

26 So too the Spirit helps our weakness: we don't know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself pleads for us with wordless groans.

27 He who searches hearts knows the Spirit's mind, since the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to our Father's will.

28 We know all things work together for good for those who love our Father, who are called according to his purpose.

29 Those he foreknew, he also predestined to be shaped to his Son's image, so he would be firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

30 Those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

What does Romans 8:28 say?

In the Father's Heart Bible™, Romans 8:28 reads: “We know all things work together for good for those who love our Father, who are called according to his purpose.”

What does Romans 8:28 mean?

Romans 8:28 means that our Father works all things, including suffering, together for good for those who love him. It does not say every event is good. The next verse defines the good: being shaped into the image of his Son, as part of the family our Father always meant to have.

Does Romans 8:28 mean everything happens for a reason?

Not quite. Paul does not call bad things good; Romans 8 openly describes groaning and weakness. He says our Father works in all things for good for those who love him, and he names that good in verse 29: becoming like his Son.
