Luke 4

4 ¹Jesus, wey full with the Holy Spirit, come back from Jordan, and the Spirit lead am go inside di wilderness. ²For forty days, di devil dey tempt am, and e no chop anything for those days; when di days finish, hunger catch am.

³Di devil tell am, “If na you be the Pikin of God, tell dis stone make e turn bread.”

⁴And Jesus answer am, “Dem write am say, ‘Na no be only bread man go take live.’”

⁵Then di devil carry am go up, and for just one moment e show am all di kingdoms of di world. ⁶E tell am, “I go give you all dis authority and dem glory, because dem don hand am give me, and I dey give am to anybody wey I want. ⁷So if you go worship me, everything go be your own.”

⁸And Jesus answer am, “Dem write am say, ‘Na your Papa you go worship, and na only am you go serve.’”

⁹Then e carry am go Jerusalem, stand am for di highest point of di temple, and say, “If na you be the Pikin of God, jump from here come down, ¹⁰because dem write am say, ‘E go command im angels concerning you, make dem guard you,’ ¹¹and ‘Dem go carry you for dem hand, so dat you no go knock your leg for stone.’”

¹²And Jesus answer am, “Dem talk am say, ‘You no go put your Papa to test.’”

¹³And when di devil don finish every temptation, e comot from am reach di time wey go suit am.

Papa im Pikin Come Back with Power

¹⁴Jesus come back go Galilee with di power of the Holy Spirit, and news about am spread reach di whole region. ¹⁵And e dey teach for dem synagogue, and everybody dey praise am.

¹⁶E come reach Nazareth, di place wey dem raise am, and as e dey do, e enter di synagogue for Sabbath day, then e stand up to read. ¹⁷Dem give am di scroll of di prophet Isaiah, e open am, and e find di place wey dem write say:

¹⁸“Di Spirit of our Papa dey on top me, because e don anoint me to preach good news to di poor people. E don send me to announce freedom to di captives and to make blind people see again, to set free those wey dem dey oppress, ¹⁹to announce di year of our Papa im favor.” ^a a v19 E dey point to di Year of Jubilee — when dem cancel debt, free captives, and give back land.

²⁰E roll di scroll back, give am back to di attendant, and sidon. Every eye for di synagogue fix on am.

²¹And e begin tell dem, “Today dis Scripture don happen for una ear.”

²²Everybody talk well about am, and dem wonder for di sweet words wey comot from im mouth, and dem say, “No be dis one na Joseph im pikin?”

²³E tell dem, “For sure, una go quote dis proverb give me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ Do here for your own hometown too, di things wey we hear happen for Capernaum.” ²⁴And e say, “I dey tell una true-true, no prophet dey welcome for im own hometown. ²⁵But I dey tell una true say, plenty widows dey live for Israel for Elijah im days, when di sky lock up for three years and six months and big famine hit di whole land, ²⁶yet dem no send Elijah go any of dem, na only one widow for Zarephath of Sidon. ²⁷Plenty people get leprosy for Israel for di days of di prophet Elisha, yet dem no clean any of dem except Naaman di Syrian.”

²⁸When dem hear dis things, everybody for di synagogue vex well well. ²⁹Dem stand up, drive am comot from di town, and carry am go di edge of di hill wey dem build dem town on top, so dat dem go throw am down di cliff. ³⁰But e waka pass through di crowd and go im way.

Jesus Make Unclean Spirit Keep Quiet

³¹E come down go Capernaum, one town for Galilee, and e teach dem for Sabbath day, ³²and dem wonder for im teaching, because im word carry authority. ³³For di synagogue one man dey wey get di spirit of unclean demon; e shout with loud voice, ³⁴“Ha! Wetin you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? You come to destroy us? I know who you be—God im Holy One.”

³⁵Jesus rebuke am: “Keep quiet and comot from am!” Di demon throw am down for front of everybody, comot from am, and no do am any harm.

³⁶Everybody wonder and dey ask each other, “Wetin be dis word? With authority and power e dey command unclean spirits, and dem dey comot!” ³⁷And news about am go out reach every place for di surrounding region.

Papa Dey Heal Through im Pikin

³⁸And e stand up, comot from di synagogue, and enter Simon im house. Now Simon im mother-in-law dey sick with high fever, and dem beg am to help her. ³⁹E stand over her and rebuke di fever; e leave her, and she stand up sharp sharp and begin serve dem. ⁴⁰As di sun dey set, everybody wey get person wey dey sick with different-different sickness bring dem come meet am; e put im hand on top each one, and e heal dem. ⁴¹Demons too come out from plenty people, dey shout, “Na you be the Pikin of God!” E make dem keep quiet, and no gree dem talk, because dem know say na im be di Christ.

⁴²For early morning e comot go one lonely place. Crowd dey look for am, come meet am, and dey try to stop am make e no leave dem.

⁴³But e tell dem, “I must announce di good news of di kingdom of our Papa to di other towns too—na for dis reason dem send me.”

⁴⁴And e dey preach for di synagogues of Judea.
