Luke 4

4 ¹Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, led by the Spirit in the wilderness. ²Forty days, tempted by the devil, eating nothing in those days; when they ended, he was hungry.

³The devil told him, "If you're the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."

⁴And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'"

⁵Then the devil led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. ⁶He said to him, "I will give you all this authority and their glory, for it has been entrusted to me, and I give it to whomever I want. ⁷If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours."

⁸And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You will worship your Father, and serve only him.'"

⁹Then he led him to Jerusalem, stood him on the temple's highest point, and said, "If you're the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,' ¹¹and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you won't strike your foot against a stone.'"

¹²And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not put your Father to the test.'"

¹³And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

The Father's Son Returns in Power

¹⁴Jesus returned to Galilee in the Holy Spirit's power, and news of him spread through the whole region. ¹⁵And he taught in their synagogues, and everyone glorified him.

¹⁶He came to Nazareth, where he was raised, and as usual entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, then stood to read. ¹⁷He was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, unrolled it, and found where it was written:

¹⁸"The Spirit of our Father is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, ¹⁹to proclaim the year of our Father's favor." ^a a v19 Alludes to the Year of Jubilee — when debts were canceled, captives freed, and land restored.

²⁰He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him.

²¹And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

²²All spoke well of him, amazed at the gracious words from his mouth, and said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

²³He said to them, "Surely you'll quote this proverb to me: 'Doctor, heal yourself.' Do here in your hometown, too, what we heard happened in Capernaum." ²⁴And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. ²⁵But truly I tell you, many widows lived in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut three years and six months and a great famine struck the whole land, ²⁶and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to a widow in Zarephath of Sidon. ²⁷Many had leprosy in Israel in the days of the prophet Elisha, yet none was made clean except Naaman the Syrian."

²⁸When they heard these things, everyone in the synagogue was furious. ²⁹They got up, drove him out of town, and took him to the edge of the hill their town was built on, to throw him off the cliff. ³⁰But he walked through the crowd and went away.

Jesus Silences an Unclean Spirit

³¹He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath, ³²and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. ³³In the synagogue was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon; he cried out in a loud voice, ³⁴Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—God's Holy One.

³⁵Jesus rebuked him: "Be silent and come out of him!" The demon threw him down before them all, came out, and did him no harm.

³⁶All were amazed and asked each other, "What word is this? With authority and power he orders unclean spirits, and they leave!" ³⁷And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

The Father Heals Through His Son

³⁸And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they asked him to help her. ³⁹He stood over her and rebuked the fever; it left her, and she rose at once and began serving them. ⁴⁰As the sun set, all who had someone sick with various diseases brought them to him; laying his hands on each one, he healed them. ⁴¹Demons also came out of many, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" He silenced them, forbidding them to speak, since they knew he was the Christ.

⁴²At daybreak he went out to a remote place. Crowds looked for him, came to him, and tried to keep him from leaving them.

⁴³But he told them, "I must announce the good news of our Father's kingdom to the other towns too—this is why I was sent."

⁴⁴And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
