John 14

14 ¹"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in our Father; believe also in me. ²In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? ³And if I go and prepare a place for you, I'll come back and take you to myself, so you'll be where I am. ⁴And you know the way to where I am going."

⁵Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you're going—how can we know the way?"

⁶Jesus told him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ⁷Had you known me, you would have known my Father too. Starting now, you know him and have seen him."

⁸Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."

⁹Jesus said, "Philip, I've been with you this long, and you don't know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? ¹⁰Don't you believe I'm in the Father, and the Father in me? The words I speak to you aren't my own—the Father living in me does his works. ¹¹Believe me: I'm in the Father, the Father in me—or else believe because of the works themselves. ¹²Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I do, and will do even greater works, because I am going to the Father. ¹³Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, so the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

If You Love Me

¹⁵"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. ¹⁶And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, the Holy Spirit, to be with you forever, ^a a v16 Jesus names this Helper as the Holy Spirit at verse 26 — FHB carries the name forward so readers meet the Spirit by name from the first promise. ¹⁷the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, since it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, since he remains with you and will be in you. ¹⁸I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ^b b v18 Jesus came to bring orphans home — this verse names the heart of why he came. ¹⁹Soon the world won't see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too. ²⁰On that day you'll know: I'm in my Father, you in me, and I in you. ²¹Whoever has my commandments and keeps them loves me, and my Father will love whoever loves me. I will love him and show myself to him."

²²Judas, not Iscariot, asked, "Lord, why show yourself to us and not to the world?"

²³Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love that person, and we will come to them and make our home with them. ^c c v23 The Father who prepares rooms in his house for us in verse 2 makes his home in those who love Jesus — both directions of intimacy in one chapter. ²⁴Whoever doesn't love me doesn't keep my words. And the word you hear isn't mine but the Father's who sent me.

²⁵I have spoken these things to you while I am still with you. ²⁶But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of everything I said to you.

²⁷Peace I leave you; my own peace I give you. Not as the world gives, I give it. Don't let your hearts be troubled or afraid. ²⁸You heard me say to you, 'I'm going away, and I'm coming to you.' If you loved me, you'd have rejoiced, because I'm going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. ^d d v28 Jesus speaks here of his place in the Father's sending — the Son submitting to the Father's mission — not of any lesser nature. Father and Son are one (10:30); the Son honors the Father who sent him. ²⁹And now I've told you before it happens, so that when it happens you'll believe. ³⁰I won't talk with you much longer—this world's ruler is coming. He has no hold on me, ³¹but I do exactly as the Father commanded me, so the world may know I love the Father. Get up, let's leave this place."
