What John 14:6 means
John 14:6 is Jesus answering a worried disciple: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” It is spoken on the last night before the cross, in the middle of words of comfort.
The chapter begins, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Jesus tells his friends that in his Father’s house are many rooms, that he is going to prepare a place for them, and that they know the way. Thomas answers honestly: “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going—how can we know the way?” John 14:6 is the reply. The way is not a map. It is a person.
Notice where the way leads: to the Father. Jesus does not only show the road home; he is the road, because he is the Son who knows the Father. The next verse says, “Had you known me, you would have known my Father too.” Read in its setting, John 14:6 is less a wall than a door: an invitation home, through the Son, to a Father with room in his house.
