Luke 24

24 ¹On the first day of the week, at dawn, they came to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared. ²They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, ³but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. ⁴While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling clothes. ⁵Frightened, they bowed their faces to the ground. The men asked, "Why seek the living among the dead? ⁶He's not here—he's risen. Remember what he told you while still in Galilee, ⁷that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day."

⁸And they remembered his words, ⁹returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and all the rest. ¹⁰Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them told these things to the apostles. ¹¹But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe them. ¹²Peter got up and ran to the tomb; bending down, he saw only the linen cloths, then went home amazed at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

¹³That same day two of them traveled to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, ¹⁴and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. ¹⁵While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. ¹⁶But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you walk?" They stopped, looking sad.

¹⁸One of them, Cleopas, replied, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there these days?"

¹⁹He asked, "What things?" They said, "About Jesus of Nazareth—a prophet powerful in deed and word before our Father and all the people,

²⁰and how our chief priests and rulers handed him over to a death sentence, and crucified him. ²¹We'd hoped he was the one to redeem Israel. Yet on top of all this, it's the third day since these things happened. ²²Some women of ours also amazed us—early at the tomb, ²³and not finding his body, they came back saying they'd even seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. ²⁴Some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women said, but they did not see him."

²⁵He said to them, "How foolish you are, and slow to believe all the prophets said! ²⁶Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?"

²⁷And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them from all the Scriptures everything about himself.

²⁸And they approached the village they were heading to, and he pretended to go farther. ²⁹But they insisted, "Stay with us—evening is near, the day nearly done." So he went in to stay with them.

³⁰As he reclined with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. ³¹And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. ³²They said to each other, "Weren't our hearts burning within us as he spoke to us on the road, as he opened the Scriptures to us?" ³³That same hour they got up, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those with them gathered together, ³⁴saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" ³⁵And they told what happened on the road, and how he was recognized in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Own

³⁶As they spoke these things, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace to you!"

³⁷But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.

³⁸And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹Look at my hands and my feet—it's really me. Touch me and see: a spirit has no flesh and bones, as you see I have."

⁴⁰And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"

⁴²They gave him a piece of broiled fish, ⁴³and he took it and ate before them.

⁴⁴He said to them, "This is what I told you while still with you: everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."

⁴⁵Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

⁴⁶and told them, "This is written: the Christ must suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, ⁴⁷and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. ⁴⁸You are witnesses of these things. ⁴⁹I am sending the promise of my Father on you. Stay in the city until you are dressed with power from on high."

The Father Receives His Son

⁵⁰And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. ⁵¹While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. ⁵²And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, ⁵³and were continually in the temple blessing our Father.
