Father, the Hour Has Come
Jesus prays out loud in front of them. He tells his Father the work is finished, asks that these men be kept in his Father's name and guarded from the evil one, and prays for all who will believe later, that they be one.
17 1After saying this, Jesus looked up to heaven and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, so the Son may glorify you, a a v1 John 17 is Jesus's longest recorded prayer to the Father — spoken the night before the cross, opening his heart to the One he calls Father, Holy Father, and righteous Father. 2since you gave him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all you gave him. 3This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true Father, and Jesus Christ whom you sent. 4I glorified you on the earth, having finished the work you gave me to do. 5Father, glorify me now with yourself, with the glory I had with you before the world existed.
6I revealed your name to those you gave me from the world. They were yours; you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8for I gave them the words you gave me; they received them, truly knew I came from you, and believed you sent me. 9I pray for them, not for the world, but for those you gave me, since they are yours. 10Everything mine is yours, and yours is mine, and I am glorified in them. 11I'm no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I'm coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, the name you gave me, so they may be one as we are. 12While with them, I kept them in your name you gave me. I guarded them—none was lost except the son of destruction, so Scripture would be fulfilled. b b v12 "The son of destruction" is a title for Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Jesus. 13Now I come to you, and I say these things in the world so they may have my joy completed in themselves. 14I've given them your word; the world hated them, since they're not of the world, just as I'm not of the world. 15I don't ask you to remove them from the world, but to guard them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17Make them holy by truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19For them I make myself holy, so they too may be made holy in truth.
20I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word. 21Father, let them all be one, as you're in me and I in you, so they're in us too, and the world believes you sent me. 22The glory you have given me, I have given them, so they may be one as we are one. 23I in them and you in me, so they may be made completely one, so the world may know you sent me and loved them as you loved me. 24Father, I want those you gave me to be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you gave me because you loved me before the world was made. 25Righteous Father—the world doesn't know you, but I know you, and these know you sent me. 26I have made your name known to them, and will keep making it known, so the love you loved me with may be in them, and I in them."
