Psalms 141

Book

Eyes Fixed on You

A psalm of David.

An evening prayer offered like incense. What he asks his Father to guard is his own mouth and appetite — not to join wrongdoers or enjoy their delicacies — and he welcomes correction from a righteous man as oil on his head.

Chapter 141.

My Father, I call to you; come quickly to me. Listen to my voice when I cry out to you.

Let my prayer rise before you like incense, the lifting of my hands like the evening offering.

Set a guard, my Father, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart turn to any evil, to join in wicked deeds alongside those who do wrong; and do not let me feast on their delicacies.

Let the righteous strike me—it is kindness; let him correct me—it is oil for my head; my head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is always against the deeds of the wicked.

When their rulers are thrown down from the rocky cliffs, then the people will hear my words, for they are pleasant. As one plows and breaks open the earth, so our bones are scattered at the mouth of the grave.

But my eyes are fixed on you, my Sovereign Father; in you I take refuge—do not leave me defenseless. Keep me from the trap they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong. Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I alone pass by in safety.
