What Philippians 4:6–7 means

Philippians 4:6–7 is Paul’s answer to anxiety: “Worry about nothing; instead, in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to our Father. The peace of our Father, beyond all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

It is not a command to stop feeling anxious by willpower. It is an exchange. “Worry about nothing” is matched by “in everything” pray: every worry becomes a request, brought to our Father with thanksgiving. Paul wrote this in chains, so he is not speaking from an easy life. Just before it he says, “The Lord is near.”

The promise is not that every request will be answered the way we want, but that our Father’s peace will stand guard. The word is military: peace keeps watch over the heart and the mind. It is “beyond all understanding,” which means it does not wait for the problem to make sense. The next verses show how to keep it: fix your mind on whatever is true, honourable, right, pure and lovely.

Philippians 4:6–7 in context

8 Finally, brothers, fix your minds on whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy—and keep dwelling on these things.

9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—do these things, and our Father of peace will be with you.
