What Philippians 4:13 means
Philippians 4:13 is Paul’s testimony that he can face anything through the strength Christ gives him. He wrote it in chains, thanking the church in Philippi for a gift they had sent, and it comes at the end of a confession about contentment.
The verses just before it set the meaning. Paul says he has learned to be content in any circumstance: he knows how to be brought low and how to overflow, full and hungry, with plenty and with nothing. “All things” is that list. It is not a promise that we can win every game or reach every goal; it is the strength to stay steady, trusting and content in every season, the good ones and the empty ones.
And the strength is not his own. “Through Christ who strengthens me” is the whole secret. A few lines later Paul turns the same confidence toward the people he is writing to: “my Father will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” The one who strengthens is also the one who provides.
