Psalms 66

Book

Shout to Our Father, All the Earth

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

The whole earth is called to look at one thing our Father did: the sea turned into dry land. Then the voice narrows to personal testimony — we were tested and refined like silver, men rode over our heads, and he brought us out into abundance.

Chapter 66.

Shout for joy to our Father, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious. Say to our Father, "How awesome are your deeds! By your great power your enemies cringe before you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name."

Come and see the works of our Father, awesome in his deeds toward all people. He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There we rejoiced in him. He rules by his might forever; his eyes keep watch on the nations—let not the rebellious exalt themselves.

Bless our Father, all peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept us among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, our Father, have tested us; you have refined us as silver is refined. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs. You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water, yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance. a a v12 "Ride over our heads" is an ancient expression for being completely dominated and subjugated.

I will come into your house with burnt offerings; I will pay my vows to you, the vows my lips uttered and my mouth promised when I was in trouble. I will offer you burnt offerings of fattened animals, with the smoke of sacrificed rams; I will offer bulls and goats.

Come and hear, all you who fear our Father, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. I cried out to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Sovereign Father would not have listened. But truly our Father has listened; he has heeded my prayer. Blessed be our Father, who has not rejected my prayer or removed his covenant love from me!
