Matthew 16

16 ¹The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test him, asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

²He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'The weather will be fair, for the sky is red.'

³"And in the morning, 'Stormy today, for the sky is red and gloomy.' You know how to read the sky's face, but can't read the times' signs.

⁴"An evil, unfaithful generation seeks a sign; no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away.

The Leaven of False Teaching

⁵When the disciples crossed to the other side, they had forgotten to bring bread.

⁶Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

⁷They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we brought no bread."

⁸Aware of this, Jesus said, "Why discuss among yourselves, you of little faith, that you have no bread? ⁹Still, don't you understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the 5,000, and how many baskets you collected?

¹⁰"Or the seven loaves for the 4,000, and how many baskets you gathered?

¹¹"Why don't you understand I wasn't talking to you about bread? Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

¹²Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the yeast in bread, but of the Pharisees' and Sadducees' teaching.

Peter Confesses the Son of the Father

¹³Arriving in the area of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

¹⁴They said, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

¹⁵He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

¹⁶Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living Father."

¹⁷Jesus replied, "Simon son of Jonah, you are blessed—flesh and blood didn't reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven.

¹⁸"And I tell you: you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church; the gates of the grave will not overpower it.

¹⁹"I will give you the keys of our Father's kingdom; whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven."

²⁰Then he strictly ordered the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

The Son Must Suffer and Rise

²¹From then on, Jesus began telling his disciples he must go to Jerusalem, suffer much from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised on the third day.

²²Peter took him aside and rebuked him: "Never, Lord! This will never happen to you."

²³But he turned and told Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me, because you're not thinking about what our Father cares about, but what people care about."

²⁴Then Jesus told his disciples, "Whoever wants to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁵"For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

²⁶"What good is it if a person gains the whole world but loses his soul? Or what can a person give in exchange for his soul?

²⁷"For the Son of Man is about to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and will then repay each person according to what they have done.

²⁸"Truly I tell you: some standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
