Nothing but Christ Crucified
Paul deliberately came with no impressive rhetoric, only Christ crucified, so their faith would rest on our Father's power rather than a speaker's skill. The wisdom he does teach is hidden, prepared before time began, and known only as our Father's Spirit reveals it.
2 1When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I didn't proclaim the testimony of our Father with fancy words or wisdom. 2For I resolved to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 3And I came to you in weakness, in fear, and with much trembling. 4My message and preaching relied not on persuasive words of wisdom, but on proof of the Holy Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom but on the power of our Father.
6We do speak wisdom among the mature—not wisdom of this age, nor of this age's rulers, who are fading away. 7No, we speak the wisdom of our Father, a hidden mystery our Father destined before time began, for our glory. 8None of this age's rulers knew it; had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9As it is written: "What no eye has seen, no ear heard, and no human heart conceived—these things our Father has prepared for those who love him."
10But our Father revealed them to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even our Father's depths. 11Who knows a person's thoughts except their own spirit within them? So too, no one knows our Father's thoughts except our Father's Spirit. 12We received not the world's spirit, but the Spirit from our Father, so we might know what our Father freely gave us. 13We speak this, not in words human wisdom teaches but the Spirit teaches, explaining spiritual truths to spiritual people. 14The person without the Spirit does not accept what comes from the Spirit of our Father; it is foolish to him, and he cannot grasp it, because it takes spiritual discernment. 15The person who is spiritual discerns all things, but is himself subject to no one's judgment. 16For "who has known our Father's mind, to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
