Remember Your Father Who Provides
8 1 Carefully obey every commandment I'm giving you today, so you may live, multiply, enter, and possess the land our Father swore to your ancestors. 2 Remember the whole way your Father led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble and test you, to know what was in your heart — whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 He humbled you, made you hungry, then fed you manna which neither you nor your ancestors knew, to teach you that people do not live on bread alone, but on every word from the mouth of our Father. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor your feet swell, these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, so your Father disciplines you. 6 So keep the commandments of your Father, walking in his ways and fearing him. 7 For your Father is bringing you into a good land — a land of streams, springs, and deep waters flowing through valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat and barley, vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey 9 A land where you'll eat bread without scarcity, lacking nothing—a land of iron stone, whose hills you'll dig for copper. 10 You will eat, be full, and bless your Father for the good land he gave you.
11 Be careful not to forget your Father, failing to keep his commandments, rules, and statutes I command you today. 12 for when you have eaten and are full, and have built fine houses and live in them, 13 and your herds and flocks multiply, your silver and gold multiply, and all you have multiplies 14 then your heart grows proud, and you forget your Father, who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery, 15 who led you through that vast, dreadful wilderness of venomous snakes and scorpions, of drought and no water, who brought you water out of flint rock, 16 who fed you manna in the wilderness, unknown to your ancestors, to humble and test you, and in the end do you good 17 Watch out—don't say in your heart, 'My power, my hand's strength, made this wealth for me.' 18 Remember your Father, for he gives you power to gain wealth, to confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
19 But if you ever forget your Father, go after other gods, serve and bow down to them, I testify against you today: you will surely perish. 20 Like the nations our Father destroys before you, you too will perish, since you would not obey your Father's voice.
