Deuteronomy 7

Book

The Father Clears the Way

Chapter 7.

When your Father brings you into the land you're entering to possess, and drives out many nations ahead of you—Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—seven nations bigger and stronger than you —When your Father gives them to you and you defeat them, destroy them completely. Make no covenant with them, show them no mercy. Don't intermarry with them—don't give your daughter to his son or take his daughter for your son. For they will turn your children from following me to serve other gods; our Father's anger will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you. Instead, do this to them: tear down their altars, smash their pillars, cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their carved images. You are a people holy to your Father; your Father chose you from all peoples on earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Your Father loved and chose you not because you outnumbered other peoples—you were the fewest of all peoples. But because your Father loves you and keeps his oath sworn to your fathers, he brought you out with a mighty hand and rescued you from slavery's house, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know: your Father is our Father, the faithful One who keeps covenant and faithful love for a thousand generations, for those who love him and keep his commands. but repays haters to their face, destroying them; he is not slow to repay a hater to his face. So keep the commandment—the statutes and the rules—that I am commanding you today, and carry them out.

Because you listen to these rules, keeping and doing them, your Father will keep for you the covenant and faithful love sworn to your fathers. He will love you, bless you, multiply you—bless your womb's fruit and your ground's fruit: grain, new wine, oil, the increase of your herds, the young of your flock—in the land he swore to your fathers to give you. You will be blessed above all peoples; none among you, male or female, will be barren, nor your livestock. Your Father will remove all sickness from you, putting none of Egypt's evil diseases you knew on you, but on all who hate you. Destroy all the peoples your Father gives you. Don't pity them or serve their gods — that will trap you. If you think, 'These nations are greater than I; how can I drive them out?' —do not fear them. Remember well what your Father did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: the great trials your eyes saw, the signs and wonders, the strong hand and outstretched arm by which your Father brought you out. Your Father will do the same to all peoples you fear. Your Father will send the hornet among them until those remaining and hiding from you die. Do not dread them, for your Father is among you, a great and awesome our Father. Your Father will drive out these nations before you slowly. You cannot finish them quickly, or wild animals will multiply against you. Your Father will hand them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed. He will give their kings into your hand, and you will erase their name from under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you until you destroy them. Burn their gods' carved images with fire. Don't crave the silver or gold on them or take it for yourself, or you'll be trapped by it—it is detestable to your Father. Do not bring a detestable thing home, or you will be devoted to destruction like it. Detest it, despise it, for it is devoted to destruction.
