My Soul Waits
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
David waits in silence for his Father alone while others batter at him like a leaning wall, blessing him aloud and cursing inwardly. He weighs both the lowly and the powerful and finds them lighter than breath, then tells everyone else to pour out their hearts too.
62 1For my Father alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. 2He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will never be greatly shaken. 3How long will you all assault a man, battering him down, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence? 4They only plan to topple him from his high position; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse.
5For my Father alone, my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. 7My salvation and my glory rest on my Father; my mighty rock, my refuge, is in my Father. 8Trust in him at all times, people; pour out your hearts before him; our Father is a refuge for us.
9Surely the lowly are but a breath, the powerful a delusion; on the scales they go up—together they are lighter than a breath. 10Put no trust in extortion; place no empty hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11Once our Father has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to our Father, a a v11 "Once… twice" is a Hebrew poetic pattern meaning: this above all is what matters most. 12and to you, my Sovereign Father, belongs covenant love. For you will repay each person according to what he has done.
