What Proverbs 3:5–6 means
Proverbs 3:5–6 is a father’s advice to his son about trust: “Trust in our Father with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.”
“With all your heart” means trust is not a corner of life kept for emergencies. And “do not lean on your own understanding” does not mean stop thinking; it means do not put your whole weight on what you can see and work out. Our own understanding is real but small, and it cannot hold us up when life stops making sense.
The promise comes with an invitation: “in all your ways know him.” The word is relational. It is not only to acknowledge him in a formal way but to know him in every part of life, work and home and decisions. When we do, he makes the paths straight: not always easy, but leading somewhere, because a Father who knows the way is walking it with us. The next verse adds the warning that keeps it honest: “Do not be wise in your own eyes.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 in context
1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments,
2 for they will add length of days and years of life and peace to you.
3 Do not let covenant love and faithfulness leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 So you will find favor and a good reputation with our Father and with people.
5 Trust in our Father with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear our Father, and turn away from evil.
8 This will bring healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.
