Job Answers
Job mocks the help he has been given, then out-sings his friend about our Father's power: the earth hung on nothing, the waters bundled in clouds, the sea stilled, Rahab shattered. And all of it, he says, is only the faint edge of a whisper of him.
26 1Then Job answered: 2"How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! 3How you have counseled the one with no wisdom, and abundantly shared sound insight! 4With whose help have you spoken these words? And whose breath came from you? 5The departed spirits tremble—those beneath the waters and all who dwell there. 6The grave lies naked before our Father, and Destruction has no covering. 7He stretches out the northern skies over empty space; he hangs the earth upon nothing. 8He wraps up the waters in his thick clouds, yet the clouds do not burst beneath their weight. 9He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds across it. 10He has drawn a circle on the face of the waters, at the boundary between light and darkness. 11The pillars of the heavens tremble, astounded at his rebuke. 12By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered the sea monster Rahab. 13By his breath the heavens grew clear; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. 14And these are but the outskirts of his ways—how faint the whisper we hear of him! But the thunder of his power, who can understand?"
