What 2 Corinthians 5:17 means
2 Corinthians 5:17 is one of the most hopeful sentences Paul ever wrote: “So if anyone is in Christ, new creation! The old has passed away; look, the new has come!” The Father’s Heart Bible™ keeps the abrupt exclamation of Paul’s Greek: not the King James wording, he is a new creature, but simply, “new creation!”
It comes after Paul explains why he lives the way he does: “Christ’s love compels us,” and Jesus died for all so that the living would live for him. Being “in Christ” is not about trying harder to be new. It is being joined to someone, and the newness is his work, a whole new creation breaking in.
The next verse says where it all starts: “All this is from our Father, who reconciled us to himself through Christ.” The FHB footnote adds that reconciliation begins in our Father’s own heart: he is the one who reaches out to bring us home. The past does not get the last word. The Father does.
2 Corinthians 5:17 in context
14 For Christ's love compels us, since we're convinced: one died for all, so all died.
15 He died for all, so the living would no longer live for themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.
16 So from now on, we know no one by human standards. We once knew Christ that way too, but no longer.
17 So if anyone is in Christ, new creation! The old has passed away; look, the new has come!
18 All this is from our Father, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, giving us the ministry of reconciliation:
19 That is, in Christ our Father was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their sins against them, and entrusting us with the message of reconciliation.
20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, as though our Father were appealing through us. We appeal on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to our Father.
21 For us he made him who knew no sin to be sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of our Father.
