No Other Gods
26 1 You must not make worthless idols for yourselves, set up a carved image or sacred pillar, or place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am your Father.
2 You shall keep my Sabbaths and revere my sanctuary; I am your Father.
3 If you walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and carry them out, 4 I will give rain in its season; the land will yield its produce, and the field's trees their fruit. 5 Threshing will reach the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will reach sowing; you will eat your bread to the full and live securely in your land.
6 I will give peace in the land; you will lie down with nothing to frighten you. I will remove harmful animals from the land, and no sword will pass through your land. 7 You will chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword. 8 Five of you will chase a hundred, a hundred of you will chase ten thousand; your enemies will fall before you by the sword.
9 I will turn to you, make you fruitful, multiply you, and confirm my covenant with you. 10 You'll still be eating old, long-stored grain, clearing it out to make room for new. 11 I will set my dwelling among you, and my heart will not reject you. 12 I will walk among you and be your Father, and you will be my children. 13 I am your Father, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so you would no longer be the Egyptians' slaves. I broke your yoke's bars and made you walk upright.
The Father's Discipline
14 But if you will not listen to me and will not carry out all these commandments, 15 If you reject my statutes and your soul despises my rules, not doing all my commandments but breaking my covenant, 16 Then I too will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting disease and fever that destroy the eyes and drain life. You will sow your seed for nothing, for your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you: you will be struck down before your enemies, those who hate you will rule you, and you will flee though none pursue you.
18 Even after this, if you still won't listen, I will discipline you seven times over for your sins, 19 I will break your proud strength, and make your sky like iron and your ground like bronze. 20 Your strength will be spent for nothing: your land won't yield its produce, and the land's trees won't yield their fruit.
21 If you walk against me and refuse to listen to me, I will add blows seven times over for your sins. 22 I will send wild animals against you. They will rob you of your children, wipe out your livestock, reduce you to few, and empty your roads.
23 If even this doesn't turn you back to me, and you keep walking against me, 24 Then I too will walk against you and strike you, I too, seven times for your sins. 25 I will bring a sword against you, avenging the covenant. When you gather into your cities, I will send plague among you, and you will be given into the enemy's hand. 26 When I break your supply of bread, ten women will bake it in one oven and dole it out by weight — you'll eat and stay unsatisfied.
27 And if in spite of this you will not listen to me but keep walking against me, 28 Then I will walk against you in fury, and discipline you myself seven times over for your sins. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, pile your corpses on your idols' corpses, and my very being will detest you. 31 I will turn your cities to ruins, devastate your sanctuaries, and not smell your soothing aromas. 32 I myself will make the land desolate; your enemies who settle there will be appalled by it. 33 I will scatter you among the nations and draw a sword after you; your land will become desolate and your cities a ruin. 34 Then the land will enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of its desolation, while you are in your enemies' land; then it will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths. 35 All the days it lies desolate, it rests — the rest it lacked during your Sabbaths while you lived there.
36 Those of you who remain—I will put weakness in their hearts in their enemies' lands. A wind-driven leaf's sound will chase them; they'll flee as from a sword and fall though no one chases. 37 They'll stumble over each other as if fleeing a sword, with no one chasing, and have no strength to stand before your enemies. 38 You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will swallow you up. 39 Those left among you will waste away in their guilt in your enemies' lands; also, for their fathers' guilt, they will waste away with them.
40 But if they confess their guilt and their fathers' guilt, in the treachery they committed against me, and also that they walked in hostility toward me, 41 so that I too walked against them, bringing them into their enemies' land—if then their uncircumcised heart humbles itself and they pay for their guilt, a a v41 Uncircumcised heart: a heart that is closed and hardened, not yet yielded to God — drawn from circumcision as the covenant sign of belonging to him. 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob, also my covenant with Isaac, also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43 The land will be abandoned by them, enjoying its Sabbaths while desolate without them; they will pay for their guilt, because they despised my rules and their heart rejected my statutes. 44 Even so, while they're in their enemies' land, I won't despise or reject them to the point of destroying them and breaking my covenant with them, for I am their Father. 45 For them I will remember the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations, to be their Father: I am your Father.
46 These are the statutes, rules, and laws our Father gave between himself and Israel's people on Mount Sinai, by Moses.
