Psalms 64

Book

Tongues Sharpened Like Swords

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The weapon here is speech — tongues sharpened like swords, bitter words shot from ambush at someone blameless, by schemers certain no one can see the plan. One arrow from our Father answers it, and their own tongues bring them down.

Chapter 64.

Hear my voice, my Father, in my lament; guard my life from the terror of the enemy. Hide me from the secret scheming of the wicked, from the noisy crowd of those who do evil. They sharpen their tongues like swords; they aim their bitter words like arrows, to shoot from ambush at the blameless; they shoot at him suddenly and without fear. They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of hiding snares and say, "Who will see them?"

They plot injustice and say, "We have perfected a well-devised plan." A person's inner thoughts and heart are deep. But our Father will shoot them with an arrow; suddenly they will be wounded. They are made to stumble; their own tongues turn against them; all who see them will shake their heads.

Then everyone will fear; they will proclaim the work of our Father and ponder what he has done. Let the righteous rejoice in our Father and take refuge in him; let all the upright in heart shout for joy!
