A Family That Refuses to Mourn
A man is sleeping with his father's wife and the church is proud of its tolerance. Paul says they should have mourned, and hand him over to Satan so his spirit is saved. Old yeast must go; judging insiders is their job, our Father judges outsiders.
5 1Sexual immorality is actually reported among you—a kind not even found among those who don't know the Father: a man has his father's wife. 2And you are arrogant! Shouldn't you have mourned instead, so the one who did this would be removed from among you? 3For though absent in body but present in spirit, I have already judged the one who did this, as if present. 4When you gather in our Lord Jesus' name, my spirit present, with our Lord Jesus' power, 5hand this man over to Satan to destroy the flesh, so his spirit may be saved on the day of our Lord Jesus.
6Your boasting isn't good. Don't you know a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 7Clear out the old yeast, so you may be a new batch—as you are without yeast. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8So let us celebrate the festival, not with old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people. 10Not at all meaning this world's sexually immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idol worshipers—since then you'd have to leave the world. 11But I'm writing to you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idol worshiper, or a slanderer, or a drunk, or a swindler. With such a person don't even eat. 12Why should I judge those outside the church? Shouldn't you judge those inside? 13Our Father judges those outside. "Expel the wicked person from among you."
