Psalm 59
For the director of music. To the tune "Do Not Destroy." A golden psalm of David, when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him.
Saul's men are staking out David's house. He pictures them as a pack of dogs returning each evening to prowl, growling when they are not fed. His answer is to sing in the morning instead, calling his Father his fortress.
59 1Deliver me from my enemies, my Father; set me securely on high above those who rise against me. 2Deliver me from those who do evil, and save me from murderous men. 3For look—they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up attacks against me, though I have done no wrong and committed no sin, my Father. 4For no fault of mine, they run and take up their positions. Wake up and help me—look!
5You, my Father, the Father of heaven's armies, the Father of Israel—wake up and punish all the nations; show no mercy to any who treacherously plot evil. 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. 7Look—they pour out venom with their mouths; swords are on their lips, for they think, "Who hears us?" 8But you, my Father, laugh at them; you scoff at all the nations. 9My Strength, I watch for you; for my Father is my fortress. 10My Father, in his covenant love, will come to meet me; my Father will let me look in triumph on those who slander me. 11Do not kill them, or my people will forget; by your power make them wander, and bring them down, O Sovereign Father, our shield. 12For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride—for the curses and lies they speak.
13Consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more, so that people may know that our Father rules over Jacob to the ends of the earth. 14They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. 15They roam about for food, and growl if they are not satisfied. 16But I will sing of your strength; in the morning I will sing aloud of your covenant love. For you have been my fortress, a refuge in my time of distress. 17My Strength, I will sing praises to you; for my Father is my fortress, our Father who shows me covenant love.
