Psalms 57

Book

A Miktam of David in the Cave

For the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." A golden psalm of David, when he fled from Saul into the cave.

Hiding in a cave while Saul hunts him, David lies among people whose teeth are spears and tongues are swords. He shelters under his Father's wings until the storm passes, then wakes harp and lyre before daybreak, heart steady though nothing has changed yet.

Chapter 57.

Be gracious to me, my Father, be gracious to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge until the destroying storms pass by. I cry out to my Father, the Most High, to our Father who fulfills his purpose for me.

He will send from heaven and save me; he rebukes the one who tramples me. My Father will send his covenant love and his faithfulness. My soul is among lions; I lie down amid those who breathe fire—people whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Be exalted, my Father, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!

They set a net for my steps; I was weighed down. They dug a pit before me, but they have fallen into it themselves. My heart is steadfast, my Father, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make music. Awake, my glory! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you among the peoples, O Sovereign Father; I will sing of you among the nations. For your covenant love reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Be exalted, my Father, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
