He Has Risen
The women bring spices, find the stone rolled away and a young man saying he has risen, and run away frightened, telling no one. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and to others whom the disciples refuse to believe, then sends the eleven to all creation.
16 1When the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to go anoint him. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. 3They asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the tomb's entrance for us?" 4But looking up, they saw the stone—very large—already rolled away.
5They entered the tomb and saw a young man dressed in a white robe, seated on the right. They were alarmed. 6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You're looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He's risen—he isn't here. Look, the place they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He goes ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, as he told you.'"
8Trembling and amazed, the women fled the tomb, telling no one—they were afraid.
9Rising early the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven seven demons. a a v9 The earliest manuscripts end Mark at verse 8. Verses 9-20 are found in most later copies and are printed here, as in most modern Bibles. 10She went and told those who had been with him, who were mourning and weeping. 11Hearing Jesus was alive and seen by her, they did not believe it.
12Afterward Jesus appeared, in a different form, to two of them walking in the country. 13They went back and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.
14Later Jesus appeared to the eleven as they reclined at a meal and rebuked their lack of faith and hardness of heart, because they hadn't believed those who saw him risen.
15He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation. 16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will follow those who believe: in my name they'll drive out demons, speak in new tongues. 18They will pick up snakes with their hands; if they drink deadly poison, it won't harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
19After speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and sat at the right hand of our Father. b b v19 When the Son finished his work, he returned to his Father's side — the place of honor he shares with him. 20They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, confirming his word through accompanying signs.
