Chapter 16.

When the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices to go anoint him. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. They asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the tomb's entrance for us?" But looking up, they saw the stone—very large—already rolled away.

They entered the tomb and saw a young man dressed in a white robe, seated on the right. They were alarmed. "Don't be alarmed," he said. "You're looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He's risen—he isn't here. Look, the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He goes ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, as he told you.'"

Trembling and amazed, the women fled the tomb, telling no one—they were afraid.

Rising early the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven seven demons. a a v9 The earliest manuscripts end Mark at verse 8. Verses 9-20 are found in most later copies and are printed here, as in most modern Bibles. She went and told those who had been with him, who were mourning and weeping. Hearing Jesus was alive and seen by her, they did not believe it.

Afterward Jesus appeared, in a different form, to two of them walking in the country. They went back and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.

Later Jesus appeared to the eleven as they reclined at a meal and rebuked their lack of faith and hardness of heart, because they hadn't believed those who saw him risen.

He said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: in my name they'll drive out demons, speak in new tongues. They will pick up snakes with their hands; if they drink deadly poison, it won't harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

After speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and sat at the right hand of our Father. b b v19 When the Son finished his work, he returned to his Father's side — the place of honor he shares with him. They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, confirming his word through accompanying signs.
