A Cheerful Giver
Paul has already boasted to Macedonia that Achaia was ready, so he sends men ahead. He wants the gift given willingly, never squeezed out under pressure, because our Father loves a cheerful giver, and because the money becomes thanksgiving among people the Corinthians will never meet.
9 1About serving the Lord's people, I don't need to write you, 2for I know your eagerness, and I boast about you to the Macedonians, that Achaia has been ready since last year, and your zeal has stirred up most of them. 3So I'm sending the brothers, that our boast about you not prove empty in this case—that you'd be ready, as I said. 4Otherwise, if Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to mention you—would be ashamed for such confidence. 5So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the generous gift you had promised, so that it would be ready as a willing gift, not as something grudgingly given.
6Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each should give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for our Father loves a cheerful giver. 8Our Father can make all grace overflow to you, so that always having all you need in everything, you overflow in every good work. 9As it is written: "He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."
10He who supplies seed to the sower and bread to eat will supply and multiply your seed, and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be enriched in everything, for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to our Father through us. 12This service you perform not only meets the needs of the Lord's people, but overflows in many acts of thanksgiving to our Father. 13Proved by this service, others will praise our Father for your submission in confessing the gospel of Christ, and for your generous sharing with them and everyone else. 14In their prayers for you, they will yearn for you, because of the surpassing grace our Father has given you. 15Thanks be to our Father for his indescribable gift!
