Matthew 4

4 ¹Then the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. ²And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. ³The tempter came and said, "If you're the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

⁴But he answered, "It is written, 'People do not live by bread alone, but by every word from our Father's mouth.'"

⁵Then the devil took him into the holy city, stood him on the temple's highest point, ⁶and told him, "If you're God's Son, throw yourself down, since Scripture says, 'He will command his angels about you, and they will carry you on their hands, so you won't strike your foot on a stone.'"

⁷Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You must not put your Father to the test.'"

⁸Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the world's kingdoms and their glory. ⁹He said to him, "All these I will give you, if you bow down and worship me."

¹⁰Then Jesus told him, "Get away, Satan! For Scripture says, 'Worship your Father, and serve only him.'"

¹¹Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and took care of him.

The Light Dawns in Galilee

¹²Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. ¹³He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum, by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, ¹⁴so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: ¹⁵"The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, ¹⁶the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned."

¹⁷From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of our Father is near."

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

¹⁸Walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea—they were fishermen.

¹⁹And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people."

²⁰Immediately they left their nets and followed him. ²¹Going on from there, he saw two more brothers—James son of Zebedee and John his brother—in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending nets, and called them. ²²Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

The Father Heals Through His Son

²³He went all through Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, announcing the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. ²⁴News of him spread through all Syria. They brought him all who were sick—gripped by various diseases and pains, oppressed by demons, epileptic, paralyzed—and he healed them. ²⁵Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan. ^a a v25 The Decapolis was a cluster of ten largely Gentile cities east and southeast of the Sea of Galilee.
