What Romans 12:2 means
Romans 12:2 says: “Don’t be shaped by this age, but be transformed by renewing your mind, so you can discern our Father’s will—good, pleasing, and perfect.” It is the turning point of Romans, where eleven chapters about what our Father has done become a call to live from it.
The verse before it asks for “your bodies as a living sacrifice,” ordinary life offered to our Father because of his mercies. Then comes the contrast. Every age presses people into its own shape, quietly, through what it praises and fears. Paul says there is another way to be shaped: from the inside, by a mind that is being renewed.
Transformation here is something done to us as we keep turning toward our Father, not a self-improvement plan. And it has a purpose: so we can discern his will and find that it is good, pleasing and perfect. The next verse keeps it humble: “don’t think of yourself more highly than you should.” A renewed mind sees our Father clearly and ourselves honestly.
Romans 12:2 in context
1 So brothers and sisters, by our Father's mercies I urge you: offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to him—your true, reasonable worship.
2 Don't be shaped by this age, but be transformed by renewing your mind, so you can discern our Father's will—good, pleasing, and perfect.
3 By the grace given me, I tell each of you: don't think of yourself more highly than you should, but think with sound judgment, each according to the measure of faith our Father assigned.
