A Family Shaped by Sound Teaching
Titus is told what to say to each group, older men, older women who train the younger, young men, and slaves, so the teaching is never discredited. The grace of our Father has appeared, training people to live rightly now while waiting for Christ's appearing.
2 1But as for you, speak what is fitting for sound teaching. 2Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, love, and patient endurance. 3Older women likewise: deeply respectful in behavior, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, but teachers of what is good, 4so that they may train the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5self-controlled, pure, working at home, good, submissive to their own husbands, so our Father's word isn't insulted.
6Likewise urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7In everything be an example of good works, with integrity and dignity in your teaching, 8healthy words beyond criticism, so any opponent is ashamed, with nothing bad to say about us.
9Slaves must submit to their own masters in everything, pleasing them, not talking back, a a v9 These instructions addressed enslaved people within the first-century Roman social order. 10not stealing, but showing complete, good faithfulness, so they adorn, in everything, the teaching of our Father, our Savior.
11For the grace of our Father has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, 12teaching us to reject wickedness and worldly desires, and live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age, 13waiting for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, b b v13 Here Jesus himself is called "our great God and Savior" — one of the New Testament's clearest statements that the Son is fully God. 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and purify for himself a people of his own, eager for good works.
15Declare these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
