Heirs of the Father's Grace
They were once foolish, disobedient and hating one another; what changed was our Father's mercy, washing of new birth and the Spirit poured out, not deeds of theirs, making them heirs. So: good works, no quarrels over the law, a divisive person warned twice then left.
3 1Remind them to submit to rulers and authorities, obey, and be ready for every good work, 2to slander no one, avoid quarreling, be gentle, and show complete consideration to everyone. 3We too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hated, hating one another. 4But when the goodness and loving kindness of our Father, our Savior, appeared, a a v4 Here "Savior" names our Father himself — the source of salvation, who saves us through his Son and by his Spirit (verses 5-6). 5he saved us—not for righteous deeds we did, but by his mercy, through washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, justified by his grace, we might become heirs in the hope of eternal life. 8This word is trustworthy: I want you to insist on these things, so that those who trust our Father take care to devote themselves to good works. These things are good and helpful to everyone.
9But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, disputes, and quarrels about the law, for they are useless and worthless. 10Warn a divisive person once, then a second time; after that, have nothing more to do with him, 11knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he stands self-condemned.

12When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, since I've decided to winter there. 13Quickly send Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see they lack nothing. 14Let our people also learn to devote themselves to good works, meeting urgent needs, and not be unproductive.
