Adam's Family Line
Ten generations from Adam to Noah, each entry closing with the same three words: and he died. Long lives do not stop it. Only Enoch breaks the pattern — he walked with our Father, and was simply gone, taken.
5 1This is the written record of Adam's descendants. When our Father created humankind, he made them in the likeness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 2He created them male and female, blessed them, and named them Humankind when they were created. 3At 130, Adam fathered a son in his likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4After he fathered Seth, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.
6When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. 7After he fathered Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. 8Altogether, Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.
9When Enosh had lived ninety years, he fathered Kenan. 10After he fathered Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. 11Altogether, Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.
12When Kenan had lived seventy years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13After he fathered Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. 14Altogether, Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died.
15When Mahalalel had lived sixty-five years, he fathered Jared. 16After he fathered Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. 17Altogether, Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.
18When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch. 19After he fathered Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 20Altogether, Jared lived 962 years, and then he died.
21When Enoch had lived sixty-five years, he fathered Methuselah. 22After fathering Methuselah, Enoch walked with our Father 300 years, and had other sons and daughters. a a v22 Enoch's life is summarized as walking with our Father — a closeness so real that our Father took him home without ever facing death. Hebrews 11:5 says Enoch pleased our Father by faith. 23Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. 24Enoch walked faithfully with our Father; then he was gone, because our Father took him. b b v24 Enoch did not die like the others in this chapter; our Father took him home directly. The New Testament confirms he was taken up without seeing death (Hebrews 11:5).
25When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26After he fathered Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.
28When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son. 29He named him Noah, saying, "He will comfort us in our work and painful toil of our hands, from the ground our Father cursed." c c v29 Lamech names his son Noah — meaning "rest" — and prophesies that this child will bring comfort from the painful toil our Father pronounced in Eden. The hope of un-doing the curse begins to speak here, generations before Christ. 30After he fathered Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31Altogether, Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.
32When Noah was 500 years old, he fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
