Jeremiah 33

33 ¹The word of our Father came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still held in the guard's courtyard: ²So says our Father—maker of the earth, forming it to establish it—our Father is his name:

³Call to me, and I'll answer, and tell you great, hidden things you don't know.

⁴For our Father of Israel says this about the houses of this city and the houses of Judah's kings, torn down to defend against siege ramps and the sword:

⁵They come to fight the Babylonians, only to fill these houses with corpses of the men I struck down in anger and wrath, for I hid my face from this city for all their evil. ⁶Look, I will bring this city healing and health; I will heal my people and reveal to them abundant, lasting peace and faithfulness. ⁷I will restore Judah's fortunes and Israel's fortunes, and rebuild them as at first. ⁸I will purify them from all the guilt they sinned against me, and forgive all the guilt they sinned and rebelled against me. ⁹This city will be to me a name of joy, praise, and glory before all nations of earth who hear all the good I do for them. They will fear and tremble at all the good and peace I bring it.

¹⁰This is what our Father says: In this place you call ruined, without man or beast, in Judah's cities and Jerusalem's streets, lying desolate without man, without resident, without beast, there will be heard again. ¹¹The voice of joy and voice of gladness, voice of the bridegroom and voice of the bride, voice of those bringing thank offerings to our Father's house, saying, 'Give thanks to the Father of heaven's armies, for he is good; his covenant love endures forever.' For I will restore the land's fortunes as before, says our Father.

¹²This is what the Father of heaven's armies says: Again, in this ruined place—empty of people and animals—and in all its towns, shepherds will rest their flocks in pastures. ¹³In the hill country's towns, the Shephelah, the Negev, Benjamin's land, around Jerusalem, and Judah's towns, flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says our Father. ^a a v13 The Shephelah: the low foothills of western Judah, between the central highlands and the coastal plain.

¹⁴Look, the days are coming, declares our Father, when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. ¹⁵In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout up for David, and he will administer justice and righteousness in the land. ^b b v15 The Branch: a messianic title for the promised righteous king to come from David's line. ¹⁶In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety. And this is the name by which she will be called: 'Our Father is our righteousness.'

¹⁷For our Father says: David will never lack a man seated on the throne of the house of Israel. ¹⁸The Levitical priests will never lack a man before me offering burnt offerings, burning grain offerings, and making sacrifices, always.

¹⁹The word of our Father came to Jeremiah:

²⁰This is what our Father says: If you can break my covenant with day and my covenant with night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, ²¹then my covenant with David my servant could break too—no son of his to reign on his throne—and my covenant with the Levitical priests who serve me. ²²As heaven's stars can't be counted, and sea's sand can't be measured, so I'll multiply David my servant's offspring and the Levites serving me.

²³The word of our Father came to Jeremiah:

²⁴Haven't you noticed what these people say: 'The two families our Father chose, he has rejected'? They despise my people, no longer a nation to them. ²⁵This is what our Father says: If I have not set my covenant with day and night and the fixed laws of heaven and earth, ²⁶then I would reject Jacob's offspring and my servant David's, refusing to take from his line rulers over Abraham's, Isaac's, and Jacob's offspring. But I will bring back their fortunes and show them compassion.
