What 1 Peter 5:7 means

1 Peter 5:7 tells us what to do with anxiety: cast it “on our Father, because he cares for you.” It is one of the simplest and kindest sentences in the New Testament.

In the sentence it belongs to, it comes right after “humble yourselves under our Father’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in the right time.” Casting our anxiety on him is part of humility: admitting we cannot carry it, and trusting that his hand is strong enough. Pride holds on to worry; humility hands it over.

The reason is the whole point: “because he cares for you.” Not because worry is wrong, and not because the danger is unreal; the next verse warns that the devil roams like a roaring lion. But a Father who cares is close, and his children are invited to throw the full weight of their anxiety onto him, again and again.

1 Peter 5:7 in context

5 Likewise, younger ones, submit to elders. All of you, dress yourselves in humility toward each other, for our Father opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

6 So humble yourselves under our Father's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in the right time,

7 casting all your anxiety on our Father, because he cares for you.

8 Stay sober and watchful; your adversary the devil roams like a roaring lion, hunting someone to devour.

9 Resist him, standing firm in faith, knowing your fellow believers worldwide endure the same suffering.
