Our Father Rises to Judge
A psalm of Asaph.
Our Father stands up in the divine assembly and charges the powers who judge with rigged courts. Their assignment was never complicated: defend the weak, the orphan, the destitute. They will die like ordinary men, and the earth is handed back to its true Judge.
82 1Our Father takes his stand in the divine assembly; in the midst of the gods he renders judgment. a a v1 The "gods" of the divine assembly are the rulers and powers our Father has set over the nations — held accountable to him, never his rivals. Scripture knows one God; these stand under his judgment.
2"How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?
3"Defend the weak and the orphan; uphold the cause of the afflicted and the destitute. 4Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the grip of the wicked. 5They neither know nor understand; they wander in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6I said, 'You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.' 7But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler."
8Arise, our Father, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.
