The King Rejoices
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
The people celebrate a king who asked for life and received it, met with rich blessings and crowned with gold. His confidence rests not on his own record but on trusting our Father, whose hand will find everyone who schemes against him.
21 1O our Father, in your strength the king rejoices; in your salvation how greatly he exults! 2You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld what his lips asked of you. 3For you came to meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of pure gold on his head. 4He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—length of days forever and ever. a a v4 The Davidic king's gift of "life forever and ever" reaches its fullness in Jesus, the risen King whom death could not hold. 5His glory is great through your salvation; you bestow splendor and majesty on him. 6Surely you have granted him unending blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence. 7For the king trusts in our Father; through the unfailing love of the Most High, our Father, he will not be shaken.
8Your hand will capture all your enemies; your right hand will seize those who hate you. 9When you appear you will make them like a blazing furnace. Our Father will swallow them up in his wrath, and his fire will consume them. 10You will destroy their offspring from the earth, their children from among the human race. 11Though they plot evil against you and devise a scheme, they cannot succeed. 12For you will make them turn their backs when you aim your arrows at their faces.
13Be exalted, O our Father, in your strength! We will sing and praise your power.
