Israel Returns: The Families of Jerusalem
9 1 All Israel was registered by genealogy, recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And Judah was exiled to Babylon for their unfaithfulness. 2 The first to resettle their own property in their cities were Israel, the priests, the Levites, and the temple servants. 3 And in Jerusalem lived some of the people of Judah, of Benjamin, and of Ephraim and Manasseh: 4 Uthai son of Ammihud son of Omri son of Imri son of Bani, of the sons of Perez son of Judah. 5 And of the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons. 6 From Zerah's sons: Jeuel and his relatives, 690. 7 And of Benjamin's sons: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah, 8 Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi son of Michri; Meshullam son of Shephatiah son of Reuel son of Ibnijah. 9 and their relatives, listed by family line, 956. All these were heads of their ancestral families.
10 And of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin, 11 and Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, chief officer of our Father's house. 12 Adaiah son of Jeroham, of Pashhur, of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, of Jahzerah, of Meshullam, of Meshillemith, of Immer; 13 and their relatives — heads of their families — 1,760, capable men for serving in the house of our Father.
14 Of the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari. 15 and Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph; 16 and Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
17 The gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their relatives; Shallum was chief. 18 To this day they stand at the King's Gate, on the east side—gatekeepers of the Levite camps. 19 Shallum son of Kore, of Ebiasaph, of Korah, and his relatives of his father's house, the Korahites, oversaw the work of service, guarding the tent's thresholds; their fathers oversaw the camp of our Father, guarding the entrance. 20 Phinehas son of Eleazar was leader over them formerly; our Father was with him. 21 Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 22 Those chosen as gatekeepers of the gates numbered 212, registered by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to this trusted office. 23 They and their sons guarded the gates of the house of our Father, the house of the tent, as guards. 24 The gatekeepers were posted on the four sides: east, west, north, and south. 25 Their relatives in their villages were to come every seven days, from time to time, to be with them, 26 The four chief gatekeepers, Levites, were entrusted with the chambers and treasuries of the house of our Father. 27 They stayed the night around our Father's house, since the guard duty was theirs, and the opening, morning by morning.
28 Some were in charge of the service vessels, counting them in and out. 29 Others were in charge of the furnishings, sacred utensils, fine flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices. 30 And some of the priests' sons blended the spices. 31 Mattithiah, one of the Levites, firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was in charge of baking the flat cakes. 32 Some Kohathite relatives were responsible for preparing the rows of bread every Sabbath. a a v32 Bread of the rows: twelve sacred loaves arranged in two rows on the sanctuary table and replaced each Sabbath.
33 These singers, heads of Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers, exempt from other duties—on duty day and night. 34 These were heads of Levite families, leaders listed by family line; and they lived in Jerusalem.
Saul's Lineage: Tracing Back to Gibeon
35 In Gibeon lived Jeiel the father of Gibeon, and the name of his wife was Maacah, 36 and his firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth. 38 Mikloth fathered Shimeam; they too lived with their relatives in Jerusalem, opposite their relatives. 39 And Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal. 40 And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. 41 The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. 42 And Ahaz fathered Jarah, and Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri fathered Moza. 43 And Moza fathered Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son. 44 Azel had six sons, named Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan — these were Azel's sons.
