Bible Verses About Perseverance

Curated by Kevin White — Editor, Father’s Heart Bible™ October 30, 2026

A key Bible verse about perseverance is James 1:2–4: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Scripture speaks to perseverance in five ways: suffering that builds endurance, running the race, not giving up when weary, standing firm, and our Father who carries us through. Below, word for word in Father’s Heart Bible™, are the verses on each, linked into the chapter so you can read Hebrews 12 free and hear it.

Suffering that builds endurance

Trials are not wasted; the Scriptures say they produce something lasting.

Romans 5:3-5

Not only that, but we also boast in our suffering, since suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Hope doesn't put us to shame, because our Father's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us.

Run the race with endurance

Perseverance is a long run, and others have run it before us.

Hebrews 12:1-3

So, with so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let's strip off every weight and the sin that clings so tightly, and run with endurance the race laid out before us. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and is seated at the right hand of our Father's throne. Weigh how he endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so you don't grow weary or lose heart.

Brothers, I don't count myself as having grasped it yet. But one thing: forgetting what's behind, reaching for what's ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of our Father's heavenward call in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 4:7-8
