The Family Rebuilds the Wall Together
Gate by gate, section by section, the whole city takes up tools: priests, goldsmiths, a perfumer, district rulers, men from Jericho and Tekoa, Shallum working beside his daughters. Only the Tekoite nobles refuse to stoop to the labor.
3 1Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests rose and built the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set up its doors; they dedicated it up to the Tower of the 100, to the Tower of Hananel. 2Next to them the men of Jericho built, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.
3Hassenaah's sons rebuilt the Fish Gate, laid its beams, and set up its doors, bolts, and bars. 4Next to them, Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz repaired. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berechiah son of Meshezabel repaired. Next to them, Zadok son of Baana repaired. 5Next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles wouldn't put their necks to their masters' work.
6Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate: laid its beams, set its doors, bolts, and bars. 7Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite—men of Gibeon and Mizpah—repaired the section belonging to the seat of the governor of the province Beyond the River. a a v7 The province Beyond the River was the Persian administrative region covering all lands west of the Euphrates River, including Judah. 8Next to him, Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him, Hananiah, a perfumer, made repairs. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. 9Next to them Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10Next to them Jedaiah son of Harumaph repaired opposite his house; next to him, Hattush son of Hashabneiah repaired. 11Harim's son Malkijah and Pahath-moab's son Hasshub repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens. 12Next to him Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of half the district of Jerusalem, repaired—he and his daughters.
13Hanun and Zanoah's people repaired the Valley Gate, rebuilding it, setting up its doors, bolts, and bars, and repairing about 1,500 feet of wall to the Dung Gate.
14Malkijah son of Rechab, ruler of the Beth-haccherem district, repaired the Dung Gate—rebuilding it and setting its doors, bolts, and bars.
15Shallun son of Col-hozeh, ruler of the Mizpah district, repaired the Fountain Gate—rebuilding it, roofing it, and setting its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam by the King's Garden, to the stairs going down from the City of David. 16After him Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of half the district of Beth-zur, repaired up to the point opposite David's tombs, the built pool, and the House of the Warriors. 17After him the Levites repaired: Rehum son of Bani. Next to him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, repaired for his district. 18After him their fellow Levites repaired next: Binnui son of Henadad, ruler of half the district of Keilah. 19Beside him, Ezer son of Jeshua, Mizpah's ruler, repaired a second section opposite the armory ascent at the Angle. 20After him Baruch son of Zabbai eagerly repaired another section, from the Angle to the entrance of Eliashib the high priest's house. 21After him Meremoth son of Uriah son of Hakkoz repaired another section, from the entrance to the end of Eliashib's house. 22After him the priests from the surrounding plain made repairs. 23Next, Benjamin and Hasshub repaired opposite their house. Next, Azariah son of Maaseiah son of Ananiah repaired beside his own house. 24After him Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah's house to the Angle and corner. 25Palal son of Uzai repaired opposite the Angle and the tower jutting from the king's upper palace, by the guard's court. After him, Pedaiah son of Parosh. 26The temple servants living on Ophel repaired up to opposite the Water Gate eastward, and the projecting tower. 27After them the Tekoites repaired a second section, from opposite the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.
28Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each one opposite his own house. 29After him Zadok son of Immer repaired, opposite his house. After him Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, keeper of the East Gate, repaired. 30After him Hananiah son of Shelemiah and Hanun, Zalaph's sixth son, repaired another section. After them Meshullam son of Berechiah repaired opposite his living quarters. 31After him Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired as far as the house of the temple servants and traders, opposite the Inspection Gate, and to the upper room at the corner. 32Between the upper room at the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
