What Haggai 1:8 means

Haggai 1:8 is our Father’s instruction to a discouraged people: “Go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored.” It was spoken through the prophet Haggai to the families who had come back from exile in Babylon and then left the rebuilding of the temple unfinished for years.

The verses around it explain why. The people had told themselves it wasn’t yet time, while they finished their own panelled houses. Twice our Father says, “Consider carefully how you have lived.” They had sown much and harvested little, earned wages that seemed to fall through a purse with holes. The problem was not their effort but their order: their own houses first, His house in ruins.

So the verse is less about lumber than about putting our Father first. He asks for something simple and doable, bring down timber and build, and He tells them why it matters: so that He may take pleasure in it and be honored. When the people obeyed, His answer came at once: “I am with you, declares our Father” (Haggai 1:13). The FHB footnote calls that presence the reward.

Haggai 1:8 in context

5 So then, this is what the Father of heaven's armies says: "Consider carefully how you have lived.

6 You have sown much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but no one keeps warm. And the one who earns wages earns them only to put them into a purse with holes."

7 This is what the Father of heaven's armies says: "Consider carefully how you have lived.

8 Go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored," says our Father.

9 "You expected much, but it amounted to so little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the Father of heaven's armies. "Because of my house, which still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
