What does covenant mean in the Bible?

By Kevin White — Editor, Father’s Heart Bible™ Published October 22, 2026

In the Bible, a covenant is a binding promise that creates a relationship, and our Father’s covenants create a family: “I will be their Father, and they will be my children” (Jeremiah 31:33). It is more than a contract. A contract exchanges goods; a covenant gives persons to each other. The Hebrew word is berit and the Greek diathēkē. With Abraham our Father promised “an everlasting covenant—to be Father to you and your descendants after you” (Genesis 17:7), and Jesus said at the Last Supper, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20). Below: what covenant means, the Hebrew and Greek, the great covenants, and the new covenant. You can read Jeremiah 31 free and hear it in full.

What covenant means

A covenant is a solemn, binding commitment that makes two parties belong to each other. In the ancient world covenants were sealed with oaths and signs. In the Bible, our Father is the one who takes the initiative and binds Himself first.

He calls Himself “the faithful One who keeps covenant and faithful love for 1,000 generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9), and promises, “I will not violate my covenant or alter the word my lips have spoken” (Psalm 89:34).

The Hebrew and Greek words for covenant

The Hebrew word is berit, used for agreements between people and, above all, for our Father’s bond with His people. Its partner word is hesed, the loyal love that keeps a covenant; the FHB often renders hesed “covenant love” (the phrase appears 131 times in 129 verses of the Old Testament; elsewhere it is “faithful love”).

The Greek is diathēkē, which can also mean a will or testament. That is why the two halves of the Bible are called the Old and New Testaments: they are the old and new covenants.

A family, not a contract

The heart of every covenant is a formula repeated across Scripture, often translated “I will be your God.” Father’s Heart Bible™ renders it as what it is. To Abraham: “I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you, for all generations—an everlasting covenant—to be Father to you and your descendants after you” (Genesis 17:7). The FHB footnote says why: that is the covenant our Father is making, not a contract, but a family.

The same shape runs through the covenant with David’s son, “I will be his Father, and he will be my son” (2 Samuel 7:14), and the people at Sinai, called His “treasured possession out of all peoples” (Exodus 19:5).

The great covenants of the Bible

Scripture traces a line of covenants. With Noah, sealed by the rainbow: “I have put my rainbow in the clouds as the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:13). With Abraham, the promise of a family and blessing for all nations (Genesis 17). At Sinai, with Israel as a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:5–6). With David, a forever throne (2 Samuel 7). Each builds on the last, and each points ahead.

The new covenant

When the old covenant was broken, our Father promised a new one through Jeremiah: “I will put my instruction within them, and I will write it on their hearts. I will be their Father, and they will be my children” (Jeremiah 31:33), “For I will forgive their wrongdoing, and I will remember their sin no more” (31:34).

Jesus made that promise real on the night before the cross: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you” (Luke 22:20). Hebrews 8:10 quotes Jeremiah word for word to say it has come. Every time the church shares the cup, it remembers the covenant that made us family.
