Bible Word Meanings
What does abide mean in the Bible?
In the Bible, to abide means to remain: to stay, dwell and keep living in someone. Jesus says, “Remain in me, and I in you” (John 15:4), where older Bibles say “Abide in me.” The Greek word is menō, to stay or remain, and Father’s Heart Bible™ renders it with that plain word. Abiding is not a technique; it is staying connected, the way a branch stays in a vine, and it leads home to our Father’s love: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love” (John 15:9). Below: what abide means, the Greek word, the vine and branches, and how to remain. You can read John 15 free and hear it in full.
What abide means
Abide is an older English word meaning to remain, stay or dwell. In the Bible it describes a lasting, living connection: not visiting Jesus occasionally but making a home in Him, and Him in us.
Jesus says it simply: “Remain in me, and I in you. As a branch can’t bear fruit alone, unless it remains in the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me” (John 15:4).
The Greek word: menō
The Greek word is menō, used for staying in a house, remaining in a place, or continuing in a state. John uses it more than any other New Testament writer. It is the same word in “If you remain in my word, you are truly my disciples” (John 8:31) and “whoever remains in love remains in him, and he in them” (1 John 4:16).
Father’s Heart Bible™ renders it “remain,” the everyday word for what “abide” once meant, so the invitation is heard plainly.
The vine and the branches
In John 15 Jesus gives the picture: “I am the vine, you the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in them, bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). A branch does not strain to produce grapes; it stays attached and the life of the vine flows through it.
The fruit is for our Father: “This is how my Father is glorified: that you bear much fruit and prove to be my disciples” (John 15:8). Remaining comes with a promise: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will happen for you” (John 15:7).
Remaining in the Father’s love
Abiding leads all the way back to the Father. “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love” (John 15:9–10). Jesus invites us into the same love He lives in with His Father.
John says that love is where we live: “Our Father is love, and whoever remains in love remains in him, and he in them” (1 John 4:16).
How to abide
Remaining is simple and daily: stay in His word (John 8:31), keep His commands out of love (John 15:10), keep talking to our Father in prayer, and stay connected to His people. It is less like effort and more like staying home.
John adds the reason it matters: “And now, little children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming” (1 John 2:28).
