The Father Gives Israel Its Inheritance

Chapter 14.

These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the ancestral tribes of Israel distributed to them. Their inheritance was assigned by lot, as our Father had commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. For the descendants of Joseph had become two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites were given no portion of the land, only towns to live in, along with pasturelands for their livestock and their possessions. So the people of Israel did as our Father had commanded Moses, and they divided the land.

Caleb Receives the Father's Promise

Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know what our Father said to Moses, the man of our Father, concerning you and me at Kadesh-barnea." I was forty years old when Moses the servant of our Father sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land, and I brought him back word as it was in my heart. But my fellow scouts who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear, while I wholly followed my Father. On that day Moses swore to me, "Surely the land where your foot has walked will be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed my Father."

And now, see how our Father has kept me alive these forty-five years, just as he promised, from the time he spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old. I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out; my strength now is the same as it was then, for war and for going out and coming in. Now then, give me this hill country that our Father spoke of on that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakim were there with great, fortified cities. Perhaps our Father will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as he said.

Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day, because he wholly followed our Father, the God of Israel. Now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba, for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land had rest from war.
