Bezalel Builds the Ark

Chapter 37.

Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood—about forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high.

Gold Within and Without

He overlaid it with pure gold, inside and out, and made a gold molding around it. He cast four gold rings for its four feet—two rings on one side and two rings on the other. He made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold, and he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to carry it.

The Mercy Seat

He made the atonement cover of pure gold—about forty-five inches long and twenty-seven inches wide. 1 1 v6 The atonement cover was where our Father met his people and mercy was given; the New Testament names Jesus himself as this place of mercy, where his blood now covers us. He made two cherubim of hammered gold at the two ends of the atonement cover, one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other; he made the cherubim of one piece with the atonement cover at its two ends. The cherubim spread their wings upward, overshadowing the atonement cover with their wings, their faces toward each other; the faces of the cherubim were turned toward the atonement cover.

The Table

He made the table of acacia wood—about thirty-six inches long, eighteen inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high.

Overlaid in Gold

He overlaid it with pure gold and made a gold molding around it. He made a rim around it about three inches wide, and made a gold molding for the rim. He cast four gold rings for it and fastened the rings at the four corners by its four legs. The rings were close to the rim, as holders for the poles to carry the table. He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold, to carry the table. And he made the vessels for the table out of pure gold—its plates and dishes, its bowls and pitchers for pouring drink offerings.

The Lampstand

He made the lampstand of pure, hammered gold; its base and shaft, its cups, buds, and blossoms were of one piece with it.

One Piece, Pure Gold

Six branches extended from its sides—three branches on one side and three on the other. On one branch were three cups shaped like almond blossoms, each with bud and blossom, and on the next branch three more—so for all six branches extending from the lampstand. On the lampstand itself were four cups shaped like almond blossoms, with their buds and blossoms. A bud was under the first pair of branches extending from it, a bud under the second pair, and a bud under the third—for all six branches. The buds and the branches were of one piece with it, all of it a single piece of pure, hammered gold. He made its seven lamps, along with its wick trimmers and trays, of pure gold. He made the lampstand and all its utensils from seventy-five pounds of pure gold.

The Incense Altar

He made the altar of incense of acacia wood—about eighteen inches square and thirty-six inches high—with its horns of one piece with it.

Anointing Oil and Incense

He overlaid it with pure gold—its top, its sides all around, and its horns—and made a gold molding around it. He made two gold rings for it below the molding, on its two sides, as holders for the poles to carry it. He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.

He also made the holy anointing oil and the pure, fragrant incense—the work of a perfumer.
