Gatekeepers Appointed for the Father's Gates

Chapter 26.

Concerning the divisions of the gatekeepers: from the Korahites, Meshelemiah son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.

Meshelemiah had sons: Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth, Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh.

Obed-edom also had sons: Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sachar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth, Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peullethai the eighth, for our Father had blessed him.

Shemaiah his son also had sons who were in charge of their father's household, for they were men of great valor. The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, whose brothers Elihu and Semachiah were able men. All these were among the sons of Obed-edom — they and their sons and their brothers, able men with strength for the service — sixty-two belonging to Obed-edom.

Meshelemiah had sons and brothers, able men — eighteen in all.

Hosah, of the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him chief), Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth. All the sons and brothers of Hosah were thirteen.

These divisions of the gatekeepers, assigned by their chief men, had duties just like their brothers, ministering in the house of our Father. They cast lots, small and great alike, by their families, for each gate.

The lot for the east fell to Shelemiah. Then they cast lots for his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, and his lot came out for the north. To Obed-edom fell the south, and to his sons the storehouse. To Shuppim and Hosah fell the west, with the Shallecheth Gate on the ascending road, watch beside watch. 1 1 v16 'Watch beside watch' likely means continuous coverage — each guard post reliably held, with no gap in duty. On the east were six Levites, on the north four each day, on the south four each day, and at the storehouse two by two. At the pavilion on the west: four at the road and two at the pavilion.

These were the divisions of the gatekeepers among the Korahites and the Merarites.

The Father's Treasurers, Officers, and Judges

Of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasuries of the house of our Father and the treasuries of the dedicated gifts. The sons of Ladan, the Gershonites belonging to Ladan, the family leaders of Ladan the Gershonite: Jehieli. The sons of Jehieli, Zetham and Joel his brother, were over the treasuries of the house of our Father.

Of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites: Shebuel son of Gershom, son of Moses, was chief officer over the treasuries. His relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah his son, Jeshaiah his son, Joram his son, Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son. This Shelomith and his brothers were over all the treasuries of the dedicated gifts that King David and the family leaders, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the commanders of the army had dedicated. From the plunder won in battles they dedicated gifts to maintain the house of our Father. And all that Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah had dedicated — everything dedicated was in the care of Shelomith and his brothers.

Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons were assigned to outside duties over Israel, as officials and judges.

Of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brothers — seventeen hundred able men — had oversight of Israel west of the Jordan for all the work of our Father and the service of the king. Of the Hebronites, Jerijah was the chief, according to the genealogical records of their families. In the fortieth year of David's reign a search was made, and men of great valor were found among them at Jazer in Gilead. Jerijah's relatives were twenty-seven hundred able men, family leaders. King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter concerning our Father and the affairs of the king.
