Psalms 82

Book

Our Father Rises to Judge

A psalm of Asaph.

Chapter 82.

Our Father takes his stand in the divine assembly; in the midst of the gods he renders judgment. a a v1 The "gods" of the divine assembly are the rulers and powers our Father has set over the nations — held accountable to him, never his rivals. Scripture knows one God; these stand under his judgment.

"How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah"

Defend the weak and the orphan; uphold the cause of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the grip of the wicked. They neither know nor understand; they wander in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. I said, "You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High." But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.

Arise, our Father, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.
