So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying, "Take a census of the people twenty years old and older, as our Father commanded Moses." These were the people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt:

The Land Divided by Lot

Then our Father said to Moses,

"Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. Give larger tribes more land and smaller tribes less; each tribe's share is in proportion to its population. But the land must be divided by lot, with each tribe receiving its share according to its ancestral name. Their inheritance shall be apportioned by lot between the larger and the smaller."

The Levites who were counted numbered 23,000 — every male a month old or older. They were not counted among the people of Israel, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.

But not one person in this list had been counted by Moses and Aaron the priest in the wilderness of Sinai. For our Father had said of them, "They shall surely die in the wilderness."
