The Father Defeats the Northern Kings
11 1 When Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 and to the kings in the north: in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west; 3 to the Canaanites in the east and the west, to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, and Jebusites in the hill country, and to the Hivites below Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4 They came out with all their troops, a vast army, as numerous as the sand on the seashore, with a great many horses and chariots. 5 All these kings joined forces, and they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.
6 Our Father said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel, slain. You are to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
7 So Joshua and his whole army came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom and fell upon them, 8 and our Father handed them over to Israel. They struck them down and pursued them as far as Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh, until no survivor was left. 9 Joshua did to them as our Father had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.
10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor, and he struck down its king with the sword, for Hazor had formerly been the chief city of all these kingdoms. 11 They struck down everyone in it with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction; nothing that breathed was left, and Joshua burned Hazor itself with fire.
12 Joshua captured all the cities of these kings and all their kings, and he struck them down with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, as Moses the servant of our Father had commanded. 13 Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.
14 The people of Israel took for themselves all the plunder of these cities and the livestock, but they struck down every person with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, leaving no one who breathed. 15 As our Father had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that our Father had commanded Moses.
The Father Gives Israel the Whole Land
16 So Joshua took all that land: the hill country, all the Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its lowland, 17 from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.
18 Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 19 Not one city made peace with the people of Israel except the Hivites living in Gibeon; Israel took them all in battle. 20 For it was our Father's doing to harden their hearts so that they would wage war against Israel, in order that they might be devoted to destruction and receive no mercy, but be wiped out, as our Father had commanded Moses.
21 At that time Joshua went and wiped out the Anakim from the hill country—from Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them and their cities to destruction. 22 No Anakim were left in the land of the people of Israel; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod did any remain.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that our Father had spoken to Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. And the land had rest from war.
